The Importance of Vehicle Maintenance
As an operator or driver of a vehicle, it is your responsibility to ensure that the vehicle you are using is roadworthy. Heavy goods and public service vehicles must meet the requirements of licensing legislation. If the vehicle is deemed unroadworthy and is being driven on public roads, it is considered an offence.
Regularly performing checks before use and booking in the vehicle for servicing will allow room for potential risks to be caught – before they cause an accident or further damage.
It is incredibly important to stay on top of your vehicle maintenance as both the company and as an employee. As a driver of an unroadworthy vehicle, you will be prosecuted if the defects are considered partly or wholly your responsibility. You could even face losing your driver’s licence.

Common Queries
How often do HGV’s need servicing?
HGV inspections are required to take place regularly and if the lorry is more than 12 years old, it should have a period of no longer than a 6-week gap between its inspections. HGV 6-weekly inspections are a legal requirement and help keep the driver and public safe by spotting small defects before they grow into a larger problem. It is legally the driver’s responsibility for the condition of the vehicle whilst it is in use.
How often does a HGV need brake testing?
A HGV will need at least three successful break efficiency tests equally spread out over a year to be deemed safe. This is in addition to its annual MOT test and brake tests should be completed using approved testers. Brake testing is a vital component in preventative maintenance measures.
What equipment is used to test HGV brakes?
It is advised that calibrated roller brake testers are used to safely inspect and measure individual brake efficiency values. An approved and calibrated decelerometer can also be used to test vehicles without trailers. At DC Merrett, we have VLT VOSA Approved brake testers in our on-site workshop.
